Trekking Adventure at Rinjani : Chasing the Sunrise

Trekking Adventure at Rinjani, Rinjani Trekking

A Simple Plan That Turned Into a Great Experience

I didn’t plan anything too extreme when I decided to trek Gunung Rinjani. I wasn’t aiming for the summit or a multi day expedition. I just wanted a short escape into nature and hopefully catch a nice sunrise from the mountains.

So I joined a two day one night trekking trip via Senaru. Honestly, I thought it would be just another hike. Walk a bit, take some photos, go home.

Turns out, it became one of my favorite experiences in Lombok.

Starting from Senaru Village

The trip started with a pick up around midday. After meeting other trekkers, we headed to Senaru, a small village that most people use as the starting point for Rinjani trekking.

The atmosphere there felt different from the coast. Cooler air, fewer crowds, and everything felt slower. We spent the afternoon relaxing, walking around the village, and resting early. Nothing fancy, just preparing our legs for the next day.

It was actually nice to have this slow start instead of rushing straight into the hike.

Trekking Through the Forest

The next morning, we began the trek through a tropical rainforest. This part surprised me the most.

The trail was shaded and green almost the entire time, so it didn’t feel too hot. The path wasn’t technical, but it was steadily uphill. Lots of tree roots, some rocky sections, and a long continuous climb.

Not difficult, but definitely tiring.

It became a rhythm. Walk for a while, take a short break, drink water, repeat. Nothing dramatic, just steady progress.

What I liked most was how quiet it felt. No traffic, no notifications, just footsteps and nature sounds. It’s rare to get that kind of mental break.

Reaching the Crater Rim

After a few hours, the forest slowly opened up and the views started to appear.

Then we reached the Senaru Crater Rim.

This was the moment that made everything worth it.

The view was wide and clear. You could see the massive caldera, the lake area far below, and Mount Rinjani standing tall in the distance. It wasn’t one of those “perfect Instagram” moments. It was just genuinely impressive in real life.

We set up camp near the rim and spent the afternoon relaxing, eating, and watching the sunset. Simple things, but somehow more enjoyable when you’re up in the mountains.

The Sunrise Everyone Talks About

Early the next morning, we woke up before sunrise and walked a short distance from the tents.

Nothing fancy. Just jackets, sleepy faces, and hot drinks.

Then the sky slowly got brighter.

The light spread across the crater and everything became clearer bit by bit. It wasn’t dramatic or cinematic. It was calm and quiet. But that’s exactly why it felt nice.

Sitting there, watching the sunrise with a warm cup of coffee, I remember thinking, “Yeah, this is why people come here.”

Not for bragging rights. Just for moments like this.

Heading Back Down

After breakfast, we hiked back down through the same forest trail. Going downhill was faster but tougher on the knees. Still, everyone felt more relaxed since the main climb was already done.

By the time we returned to Senaru, we were tired, dusty, and happy.

The kind of tired that feels satisfying.

Is This Trek Worth It?

If you’re wondering whether the Senaru crater rim trek is worth doing, I’d say yes, especially if you want something short and manageable.

You don’t need extreme fitness. You don’t need to hike at midnight. But you still get amazing views and a real Mount Rinjani experience.

It’s perfect for beginners, casual hikers, or travelers who want a light adventure without going too hardcore.
