Gili Snorkeling Tour

Why Choose a Gili Snorkeling Tour?

A Gili snorkeling tour allows visitors to explore several snorkeling locations in just one trip without needing diving certification or previous experience.

The calm waters around the islands make snorkeling accessible for almost everyone. Most tours include boat transportation, snorkeling equipment, life jackets, and visits to multiple snorkeling sites in a single day.

Highlights include:

  • Swimming with wild sea turtles
  • Colorful tropical fish
  • Healthy coral reefs
  • Crystal-clear visibility
  • Famous underwater statues
  • Relaxing white sandy beaches
  • Easy island hopping between the Gilis

Because the islands are located inside protected marine areas, marine biodiversity remains one of the biggest attractions for visitors from around the world.

Where Are the Gili Islands?

The Gili Islands consist of three small, beautiful islands, each offering a completely unique vibe and distinct underwater highlights for your Gili snorkeling tour:

  • Gili Trawangan – As the largest and most popular island of the three, it is world-renowned for its vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants, and bustling atmosphere. For snorkelers, it offers easy access to shallow reefs where you can easily spot sea turtles right off the main beach.

  • Gili Meno – The smallest, quietest, and most peaceful island, making it a favorite for honeymooners and travelers seeking tranquility. It is universally famous for turtle sightings and houses the iconic Nest underwater statues, which is a must-visit stop on any snorkeling itinerary.

  • Gili Air – This island offers a perfect balance between relaxation and local culture. It feels more laid-back than Trawangan but has more social life than Meno. The waters here are home to the beautiful Coral Garden, featuring stunning coral walls and crowds of colorful reef fish.

Geographically, they are located approximately 20–30 minutes by fast boat from Bangsal Harbor in Lombok, making it an incredibly easy day trip. Additionally, they are highly accessible from Bali via fast ferry, with daily departures from ports like Padang Bai and Sanur.

Depending on where you choose to stay, a Gili snorkeling tour usually starts directly from the beachfront of one of these three islands, or via a short boat pickup from mainland Lombok.

Best Snorkeling Spots in the Gili Islands

1. Turtle Point

Turtle Point stands out as one of the most iconic and famous snorkeling locations in the Gili Islands. As its name clearly suggests, this pristine marine sanctuary is globally well known for frequent sightings of green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles. Over the years, these majestic marine creatures have become highly accustomed to snorkelers, allowing you to watch them glide gracefully and swim calmly through the reef as they feed on sea grass. Because of these magical, up-close encounters, many visitors consider Turtle Point the absolute highlight of their Gili snorkeling tour.

2. Gili Meno Underwater Statues

Perhaps the most photographed snorkeling site in Indonesia, the world-famous underwater statues near Gili Meno have grown into a massive international attraction. Originally created as an underwater art installation titled “Nest” by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, these 48 life-sized human figures serve a dual purpose as an artificial reef. Today, the sculptures are beautifully surrounded by growing coral and schools of tropical fish darting between the figures. The hauntingly beautiful setup creates one of the most unique underwater photography spots you will experience during any Gili snorkeling tour.

3. Coral Garden

Located near Gili Air, the Coral Garden offers an explosion of marine biodiversity with its beautiful hard and soft coral formations filled with colorful reef fish. It feels like swimming inside a giant, natural aquarium. When exploring this vibrant reef, you can expect to see:

  • Butterflyfish and Parrotfish scraping algae off the rocks.

  • Elegant Angelfish and the famous Clownfish (Nemo) hiding in their sea anemones.

  • Distinctive Moorish Idols and bright Blue Starfish resting on the ocean floor.

Thanks to its shallow depth and relatively calm conditions, this specific location is perfect for beginners and families who want an easy, relaxing swim.

4. Bounty Wreck

The Bounty Wreck is a fascinating artificial reef created from a sunken floating pier that once belonged to a local resort. Located on the slope of Gili Meno, it has slowly transformed over the years into a thriving marine ecosystem where countless fish gather around the structure. As you swim along the decaying jetty, you will find it completely covered in soft corals, hosting a massive variety of marine life including triggerfish, batfish, and macro sea critters. This unique stop perfectly combines rich marine life with underwater photography opportunities, making it a favorite for freedivers and adventurers alike.

5. Secret Reef

To give you a break from the popular tourist tracks, some experienced local boat captains include lesser-known snorkeling sites where coral reefs remain exceptionally healthy and crowds are much smaller. Often referred to by locals as the Secret Reef or hidden gardens, these pristine areas boast untouched coral canopies that attract rarer marine species. Depending on weather conditions, tidal currents, and your group’s swimming abilities, your expert guide may visit these hidden gems during your Gili snorkeling tour to ensure you experience the islands’ raw, uninterrupted natural beauty.

Marine Life You Can See

One reason travelers love a Gili snorkeling tour is the incredible diversity of marine life.

You may encounter:

  • Green sea turtles
  • Hawksbill turtles
  • Clownfish
  • Blue tang
  • Butterflyfish
  • Triggerfish
  • Parrotfish
  • Giant clams
  • Sea stars
  • Soft corals
  • Hard corals
  • Colorful reef fish

Every snorkeling location offers something slightly different, making each stop unique.

Types of Gili Snorkeling Tours Public Snorkeling Tour

Public Snorkeling Tour (Tur Publik)

Perfect for solo travelers or couples, this option is designed for those who want to experience the beauty of the islands while keeping their travel budget intact. On a public snorkeling tour, you will board a spacious glass-bottom boat alongside a group of fellow adventurers from all over the world. These organized daily trips typically visit 3–5 snorkeling spots, giving you a complete overview of the region’s best underwater highlights in a single journey.

The key advantages of choosing a public tour include:

  • Highly Affordable: It is by far the most budget-friendly way to get out on the water, as the operational cost of the boat and local guide is shared among all passengers.

  • Social Atmosphere: It offers a fantastic, lively environment where you can easily meet fellow backpackers, share travel stories, and make new friends from different cultures.

  • Daily Departures: You do not need to worry about rigid planning, as these boats depart every single morning from the main beach areas, offering great flexibility for your holiday schedule.

  • Great Overall Value: For a fraction of the cost of a private charter, you still get full access to quality snorkeling gear, life jackets, multiple island-hopping stops, and the expertise of a local captain.

Private Gili Snorkeling Tour (Tur Privat)

This option is ideal for families, honeymooners, photographers, or groups wanting flexibility and a highly exclusive experience on the water. Unlike shared trips, a private Gili snorkeling tour grants you complete control over your day, allowing you to experience the islands at your own pace without feeling rushed by a crowd.

The premium benefits of booking a private charter include:

  • Completely Flexible Schedule: You get to choose your own departure time. This means you can opt for an early morning start to catch the calmest waters and beat the heat, or plan around your family’s specific holiday routine.

  • Your Own Private Boat: You will have a traditional glass-bottom boat entirely to yourself and your group, ensuring maximum comfort, privacy, and plenty of space to relax between swims.

  • Fully Personalized Itinerary: You are not locked into a rigid route. If you want to skip a certain spot or spend extra time hovering over a specific coral reef, you can simply coordinate with your dedicated local captain.

  • More Dedicated Snorkeling Time: Because you don’t have to wait for a large group of strangers to get in and out of the water, you maximize your actual swimming and exploring time at each location.

  • A Much Less Crowded Experience: Your captain can intentionally time your visits to popular spots—like the underwater statues—during off-peak hours, allowing you to swim and take photos without hundreds of other tourists in the background.

What Is Usually Included?

Most Gili snorkeling tours include:

  • Traditional glass-bottom boat
  • Professional local captain
  • Snorkeling equipment
  • Life jacket
  • Multiple snorkeling stops
  • Island hopping
  • Drinking water (depends on operator)

Some premium tours also include lunch and hotel transfers.

Best Time for a Gili Snorkeling Tour

The dry season from April to October generally offers the best snorkeling conditions.

During these months you can expect:

  • Calm sea
  • Better underwater visibility
  • Sunny weather
  • Excellent photography conditions

Morning tours usually provide the clearest water before afternoon winds develop.

Is the Tour Suitable for Beginners?

Absolutely. One of the primary reasons the Gili snorkeling tour has become so immensely popular worldwide is that beginners can enjoy it safely and comfortably. You do not need any swimming experience or prior ocean training to marvel at the beautiful reefs.

To ensure complete safety in the water, most operators provide:

  • High-quality life jackets that offer excellent buoyancy for all body sizes.

  • Properly fitted snorkeling masks and easy-to-use snorkel tubes.

  • Swimming fins (flippers) to help you navigate moving water effortlessly.

  • A basic safety briefing from the crew before anyone enters the ocean.

  • In-water assistance from experienced local guides who can guide you directly to the marine life.

Because of these excellent safety standards, even non-swimmers can often participate fully by wearing a life jacket, holding onto a safety floatation ring, and staying close to the boat under the watchful eye of the crew.

What Should You Bring?

For the most comfortable and uninterrupted island-hopping experience, we highly recommend packing a small day bag with these essentials:

  • Comfortable swimwear (best worn underneath your clothes before boarding).

  • A quick-dry towel to dry off between different snorkeling stops.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin without damaging the fragile coral ecosystem.

  • Sunglasses and a sun hat to shield yourself from the intense tropical glare.

  • A waterproof phone case or a GoPro to capture your underwater memories.

  • A dry bag to keep your dry clothes, electronics, and valuables safe from ocean spray.

  • A change of dry clothes for your ride back to the hotel.

  • Extra cash for personal expenses, such as buying snacks, coconuts, or lunch at the island rest stops.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
  • How long is a Gili snorkeling tour?

Most standard public tours last between 3 and 5 hours, which is the perfect amount of time to visit all primary spots. Full-day private tours offer much more flexibility if you wish to set a slower pace.

  • Can absolute beginners join?

Yes. No previous snorkeling experience or professional swimming skills are required. The local guides are trained to assist first-timers.

  • Will I definitely see turtles?

While wildlife sightings can never be 100% guaranteed, sea turtle sightings are exceptionally common, particularly around the designated Turtle Point.

  • Which Gili Island has the best snorkeling reefs?

All three islands offer world-class spots. Gili Meno is globally famous for its underwater statues and turtle sanctuaries, while Gili Trawangan and Gili Air feature sprawling coral gardens and massive schools of tropical reef fish.

Day 1 Adventure Nature
  • Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim
The trek starts in Senaru Village and soon leads hikers into a thick tropical rainforest. Most of this part of the route is shaded, creating a cooler atmosphere with soft, earthy ground underfoot. Along the way, trekkers will pass over tangled tree roots, natural stair-like paths, and some rocky stretches, particularly on steeper sections.

The climb continues steadily at a moderate pace, requiring stamina rather than technical skills. As the elevation rises, the dense forest gradually gives way to more open ridges, revealing occasional scenic views before arriving at the Senaru Crater Rim, located 2,641 meters above sea level. After lunch, we will make our way to the Sembalun Crater Rim (2639 meters). This will take approximately 3 hours, including a prolonged steep climb. We will camp for the night on the crater rim, where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Day 2 Adventure Nature
  • Descent to Segara Anak Lake & Hot Springs
The day begins with a downhill trek from the crater rim toward Segara Anak Lake, considered one of the more challenging parts of the journey. The path can be steep and narrow, with slippery sections after rainfall, so steady and careful steps are important. As you approach the lake, the terrain gradually levels out, offering a more relaxed walk. Here, trekkers can unwind, bathe in the natural hot springs, and take in the unique volcanic landscape surrounding the lake.
Day 3 Adventure Hot Spring Nature
  • Return to Senaru Village
On the final day, the route continues with a scenic descent through lush tropical rainforest back to Senaru Village. Much of the trail is shaded and comfortable underfoot, creating a pleasant hiking experience. However, the extended downhill sections may put some strain on the knees. Along the way, you’ll encounter tree roots, rocky paths, and occasional muddy spots, especially during the rainy season.
Overview Overview
  • Overall Trail Character
Overall, this trek is classified as moderate in difficulty. It is ideal for trekkers with basic hiking experience who want to experience Segara Anak Lake and the natural hot springs without the extreme physical demands of a summit itinerary.
