Further east, Komodo National Park attracts divers and snorkelers from around the world with its famous manta rays, while Saleh Bay in Sumbawa has become one of the few places where travelers can experience the unforgettable sight of whale sharks in the wild.
At first, I thought I had to make the same decision.
Should I snorkel with turtles?
Should I choose manta rays?
Or should I chase the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming with whale sharks?
Then I discovered something I hadn’t seriously considered before.
Instead of choosing one destination, there was an opportunity to experience all of them in a single journey.
That journey was a Lombok to Komodo trip.
Honestly, I thought it would simply be a way of getting from Lombok to Labuan Bajo.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Before joining the trip, I imagined the sailing itself would simply connect two destinations.

One day you’re anchored beside a quiet island with empty white beaches stretching into the distance.
The next morning you’re surrounded by volcanic landscapes that look completely different from the day before.
Sometimes the sea is perfectly calm, reflecting the sunrise like glass.
Other mornings, pods of dolphins appear beside the boat before breakfast.
It’s difficult to describe until you experience it yourself, but after only a couple of days, you stop asking,
“Where are we going today?”
Instead, you find yourself wondering,
“What will today surprise me with?”
That’s a very different mindset from joining a single snorkeling excursion.
Before this journey, I kept comparing Indonesia’s snorkeling hotspots.
Was Bali better than the Gili Islands?
Was Komodo better than Bali?
Was swimming with whale sharks worth traveling all the way to Sumbawa?
Like many travelers, I was trying to find the best snorkeling destination.
Somewhere along the journey, that question quietly disappeared.
I realized I wasn’t collecting snorkeling spots anymore.
I was experiencing how dramatically Indonesia’s underwater world changes from one island to the next.
Every destination had its own personality.
Every reef looked different.
Every current brought different marine life.
Instead of searching for the “best” snorkeling location, I found myself appreciating the incredible diversity that exists across this part of Indonesia.

By afternoon, you’re sailing toward another island while watching flying fish skip across the water.
As evening arrives, everyone gathers on the deck to watch the sunset before sharing stories over dinner beneath a sky filled with stars.
Then, the next morning, the adventure begins all over again.
That’s when I realized something.
This wasn’t a snorkeling trip.
It was a journey where snorkeling naturally became part of everyday life.
If there was one experience I had been anticipating more than anything else, it was swimming with whale sharks in Saleh Bay.
I’d watched countless videos online.
I’d seen breathtaking photographs.
But nothing prepared me for seeing one with my own eyes.

Some snorkeling sites felt peaceful and shallow, perfect for slowly observing marine life.
Others had stronger currents that attracted larger species and created a completely different atmosphere beneath the surface.
Every stop introduced a new underwater story.
Instead of repeating the same snorkeling experience, every session felt like discovering another chapter of Indonesia’s extraordinary marine biodiversity.
Before this trip, I kept asking myself what the highlight would be.
The whale sharks?
The manta rays?
Padar Island?
Pink Beach?
Now, when friends ask me what my favorite part of the journey was, I find it surprisingly difficult to answer.
Because the experience wasn’t built around one unforgettable moment.
It was built around dozens of moments.
Watching the sunrise from the deck.
Sharing breakfast while the boat cruised toward another island.
Jumping into crystal-clear water without seeing another boat nearby.
Finding coral reefs that looked completely different from the previous day.
Watching the sea slowly change as we sailed further east.

Surely nothing could surprise me anymore.
I was wrong.

The closer we sailed toward Komodo National Park, the more I realized I wasn’t simply visiting another snorkeling destination.

At first glance, the island looks peaceful.
White sand.
Crystal-clear water.
Rolling green hills rising from the sea.

Then I noticed movement below me.
Small juvenile reef sharks slowly cruising over healthy coral reefs.
For a moment, I simply floated there watching them.
Unlike what many people imagine, reef sharks aren’t interested in humans.
They moved naturally through their habitat, completely undisturbed by our presence.
Seeing them in such clear water made me appreciate how healthy this marine ecosystem really is.
It wasn’t about excitement.
It was about witnessing nature exactly as it should be.

Then, almost effortlessly, I spotted a sea turtle slowly swimming through the reef.
There was no rush.
No dramatic moment.
It simply continued feeding while we quietly observed from a respectful distance.
That calm encounter somehow stayed with me longer than I expected.
People often describe turtle snorkeling as checking another animal off a bucket list.
But floating beside a wild turtle in its natural habitat feels completely different.
You stop taking photos for a moment.
You simply watch.
Moments like these reminded me that Komodo National Park snorkeling isn’t always about chasing adrenaline.
Sometimes the most unforgettable experiences are also the quietest.
If someone asked me which snorkeling site represents Taman Nasional Komodo, I’d probably say Titik Manta.
Not because it’s the only great snorkeling location.
But because it’s unlike anywhere else I visited during the trip.
The ocean feels alive here.
The currents carry enormous amounts of nutrients through the water, attracting one of the park’s most iconic marine animals.
Manta rays.
Watching a manta ray glide effortlessly beneath you is almost hypnotic.
Its wings seem to move in slow motion despite covering remarkable distances with each movement.
Unlike the whale sharks I encountered earlier in the trip, the manta rays felt more energetic.
They circled gracefully through the current, occasionally passing close enough for us to appreciate their incredible size before disappearing into the blue once again.
It became another reminder that every destination during this Lombok to Komodo trip tells a completely different story.
Before visiting Pink Beach, I thought the beach itself would be the main attraction.
And yes, the soft pink shoreline is beautiful.
But what impressed me even more was what waited beneath the surface.

Visibility was excellent.
The water was calm.
It felt like swimming inside an enormous natural aquarium.
That’s something I hadn’t expected.
Many visitors come here for photographs.
I left remembering the snorkeling.
As the days passed, I stopped asking myself which snorkeling spot was my favorite.
Because every destination offered something completely different.
Kelor introduced me to juvenile reef sharks.
Manjarite became the place where I quietly floated alongside sea turtles.
Manta Point delivered one of the most iconic wildlife encounters in Indonesia.
Pink Beach surprised me with coral reefs that were just as memorable as the shoreline itself.
None of these places competed with each other.
Instead, they complemented one another.
Together, they created an experience that simply wouldn’t have been possible on a single-day snorkeling tour.
That’s when I realized something.
Most people search for the best snorkeling spot.
But after completing this Lombok to Komodo trip, I don’t think that’s the right question anymore.
A better question would be:
“Where can I experience the greatest variety of marine life in one journey?”
For me, the answer was already clear.
It wasn’t one island.
It wasn’t one reef.
It was the journey itself.
And that’s exactly what made this adventure unlike any snorkeling trip I’d ever experienced before.
After spending several days sailing across eastern Indonesia, people often ask me the same question.
“Was it worth it?”
My answer is always the same.
Absolutely.
But probably not for the reason most people expect.
When people hear about a Lombok to Komodo trip, they often think about famous landmarks.
Padar Island.
Pink Beach.
Komodo dragons.
Manta rays.

Those places certainly deserve their reputation.
But looking back, those weren’t the memories that stayed with me the most.
Before this journey, I kept searching for the perfect destination.
Should I go snorkeling in Bali?
Would the Gili Islands be better?
Should I book a whale shark tour in Sumbawa instead?
Or should I just spend all my time inside Komodo National Park?
Now I realize I was asking the wrong question.
Because Indonesia isn’t a country with one incredible snorkeling destination.
It’s a country filled with countless different underwater ecosystems.
Trying to choose only one is a little like visiting a museum and deciding to look at just a single painting.
You’ll still have a wonderful experience.
But you’ll miss the bigger story.
That’s exactly what changed my perspective during this Lombok to Komodo trip.
Instead of searching for one perfect reef, I experienced how dramatically Indonesia’s marine life changes from one island to another.
One thing I appreciate most about this journey is that it never tries to replace other destinations.
Bali is still one of the easiest places in Indonesia to enjoy beautiful coral reefs.
The Gili Islands remain one of the country’s best locations for relaxed turtle snorkeling.
Saleh Bay offers an incredibly rare opportunity to encounter whale sharks in the wild.
Komodo National Park continues to amaze visitors with manta rays, vibrant coral reefs, and extraordinary marine biodiversity.
None of these destinations compete with each other.
They simply tell different stories.
What makes a Lombok to Komodo trip unique is that it allows you to experience many of those stories within one continuous adventure.
Instead of choosing between turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, or whale sharks, your journey gradually introduces you to each one as the landscape changes around you.
For me, that made every day feel completely different from the last.
When I think back to this journey, I don’t only remember what happened underwater.
I remember waking up before sunrise while the sea was perfectly still.
I remember sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee, watching remote islands slowly appear on the horizon.
I remember conversations with fellow travelers over dinner after a full day in the ocean.
I remember the quiet nights when the only sound was the gentle movement of the boat against the water.
And I remember how refreshing it felt to spend several days without rushing from one tourist attraction to another.
Somehow, life became remarkably simple.
Wake up.
Swim.
Sail.
Explore.
Eat.
Watch the sunset.
Sleep beneath a sky filled with stars.
Then wake up and do it all again somewhere completely different.
That’s something no single snorkeling excursion can recreate.

For me, the true beauty lies in seeing how Indonesia’s underwater world transforms as you travel from Lombok, across Sumbawa, and into the extraordinary waters of Komodo National Park.
Every island adds something new.
Every snorkeling stop reveals a different ecosystem.
Every day leaves you with another unforgettable memory.
