If you love snorkeling, there’s a good chance a manta ray is already on your list — and there’s an equally good chance you were thinking of Bali. Nusa Penida’s Manta Point is famous for a reason, and it’s where a lot of travelers meet their very first manta. But here’s the honest truth from someone who spends their life on these waters: if Bali is where you meet a manta, Komodo is where you fall in love with them. Manta Point in Komodo National Park is the snorkel every ocean lover should put above the rest — and this is why.

Where is Manta Point in Komodo?

Manta Point — officially Karang Makassar, or Makassar Reef — sits in the central zone of Komodo National Park, a short sail from Komodo Island and Padar, right beside the tiny sandbar of Taka Makassar. It’s a long, shallow rubble plateau where nutrient-rich currents sweep in clouds of plankton. That plankton is a dinner bell: reef mantas gather here to feed and to visit “cleaning stations,” where small fish pick parasites from their skin and gills.

The result is one of the most reliable manta encounters in all of Southeast Asia. Because the mantas come to a fixed spot rather than passing through, your chances of seeing them here are exceptional — and unlike many world-class manta sites, this one is genuinely shallow enough to enjoy with just a mask and snorkel.

What it's actually like to snorkel there

Picture floating on a warm, sunlit surface. Below you, the seabed sits only a few metres down — and then a shadow slides into view. A reef manta, wings spanning up to five metres, banks slowly beneath you, mouth open, completely unbothered by your presence. Then another. When the current runs, the mantas ride it in an almost continuous procession over the cleaning stations, and on a good day snorkelers report losing count — ten, twenty, sometimes far more, wheeling below in slow motion.

You don’t chase them. You don’t need to. You hang at the surface and let one of the ocean’s largest, gentlest animals glide through its own living room while you watch from above. It is, for most people, one of those handful of travel moments that rearranges what they thought the ocean could be.

“But I've already snorkeled with mantas in Bali…”

Good — then you already know how magic it is, and you’re exactly the person who should read this part. Bali’s Nusa Penida is a wonderful introduction, but a few things about Komodo’s Manta Point make it the next chapter rather than a repeat:

  • The water is warm. Bali’s manta site sits in a cold upwelling — temperatures there routinely drop into the high teens or low twenties Celsius, cold enough that a thick wetsuit is standard. Komodo’s central sites are tropical and far more comfortable for long, relaxed surface time.
  • The crossing is gentler. The popular Bali manta run is known for a rough, choppy boat ride that some travelers find genuinely frightening, and bad weather can close it for weeks at a time. Reaching Manta Point in Komodo is part of a calm, scenic sail through the islands.
  • Fewer boats, more manta. Bali’s easiest snorkel bay can turn into a scrum of boats and swimmers all chasing the same ray. At Karang Makassar the mantas come to the cleaning station, so the encounter tends to feel calmer and less crowded — you’re watching wild animals, not queuing for them.
  • It’s part of something bigger. In Bali, the manta is a day trip. In Komodo, it’s one scene in an itinerary that also includes Komodo dragons, the view from Padar, Pink Beach, and — if you sail in from Lombok — whale sharks along the way. None of this is a knock on Bali. It’s simply that once you’ve had the taster, Komodo is the full meal.

Are manta rays dangerous? (No — and that's the point)

This is the question we hear most, and the answer puts nervous first-timers at ease: manta rays are completely harmless to humans. They are filter feeders that eat microscopic plankton, they have no teeth to speak of, and — unlike stingrays — they have no venomous barb on their tail. They cannot hurt you.

The only rule that matters is the reverse: don’t touch them. A manta’s skin is coated in a delicate protective layer, and touching it can cause real harm to the animal, so you keep a respectful distance and let them come and go as they please. Your guide will brief all of this before you get in.

Because the mantas feed in shallow water, Manta Point is beginner-friendly when conditions are calm — a life vest, a mask, fins, and a guide are all you need, and no diving certification is required. The one thing to respect is the current: this is a drift site, so you always stay with your guide, who reads the conditions each morning and only puts snorkelers in when it’s safe.

When to go

Here’s a quiet advantage Komodo holds: the mantas are here year-round, because the currents that feed them never really switch off. There’s no single narrow window where you either get lucky or go home disappointed. That said, the dry season (roughly April to November) generally brings the best visibility, and different months see especially large aggregations as plankton blooms peak. Whenever you come, your odds of an encounter are among the best on the planet.

  • Never touch, chase, or block a manta. Stay to the side, let them approach, and they often will.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen (or a rash guard) — you’ll be at the surface under strong sun for a while.
  • Bring an underwater camera or GoPro, but don’t spend the whole time behind a screen. Some of it is meant to just be watched.
  • Go on a calm morning when you can. Flat surface conditions make for the clearest, most comfortable snorkel.

Here, trekkers can unwind, bathe in the natural hot springs, and take in the unique volcanic landscape surrounding the lake.
