Hello fellow true travelers! You have chosen the most legendary maritime adventure in Indonesia: The 4-day, 3-night Boat Trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo.
This journey is a complete package of natural wonders, passing through: Kenawa Île (The first island!), Saleh Bay (Whale Shark Point), L'Île De Komodo, Pink Beach, L'Île De Padar, Manjarite Îleet Kelor Île. Each stop promises a different kind of beauty.
However, among all that beauty, there is one fatal mistake that travelers often make, especially at the first stop: Kenawa Île.
This mistake doesn’t just ruin your sunset photos; it can put you in serious danger.
Kenawa Island is a welcome greeting from the east—a small savanna hill that is perfect for enjoying your first sunset aboard the boat. But many fail to enjoy this moment because they rush things.
1. The Slippery Danger: The Treacherous Trekking Trail
The trail leading to the summit of Kenawa hill is known to be steep, rocky, and uneven. The view from the top is absolutely stunning, but the risk is high if you are not careful.
The Fatal Mistake: As soon as the boat anchors, many travelers get overly excited and jump straight into the water for snorkeling or swimming, only to immediately climb the hill without waiting for their bodies and footwear to be completely dry.
The Consequence: Seawater (plus salt and sweat) left on your feet and shoes/sandals makes your footing on the steep rocks extremely slippery. The risk of slipping, falling, or even spraining/breaking a bone on this remote island is very high.
2. The Key to Safety: Guide’s Decision (and Guest Compliance)
Responsible boat operators (who prioritize safety above all else) will explicitly forbid or strongly advise their guests to climb the hill first in dry conditions, and only swim after they descend.
The Main Problem: Unfortunately, not all boat guides explain this risk in detail, or the guests (who have been on the boat for a while) become too negligent and fail to pay attention to basic safety instructions.
If you are on this trip and Kenawa is the first stop, remember this strategy:
Prioritize the Main Goal: The main objective at Kenawa is the Sunrise/Sunset view from the top of the hill.
Do It Dry: As soon as you arrive, change into dry trekking clothes and immediately hike the hill. Make sure your footwear provides maximum grip.
Enjoy the Sea Later: Once you are safely back down from the hill, only then should you enjoy the water for a quick swim or snorkel before the boat sails to the next destination: Saleh Bay Whale Shark Point.
Remember: One accident on the first day can ruin your entire trip—from seeing the Komodo dragons to hiking Padar and swimming at Pink Beach. Listen to Your Guide, and prioritize safety over a good photo!
