If you love snorkeling, there’s a good chance a manta ray is already on your list \u2014 and there’s an equally good chance you were thinking of Bali. Nusa Penida’s Manta Point is famous for a reason, and it’s where a lot of travelers meet their very first manta. But here’s the honest truth from someone who spends their life on these waters: if Bali is where you meet a manta, Komodo is where you fall in love with them. Manta Point \u2014 officially Karang Makassar, or Makassar Reef \u2014 sits in the central zone of Komodo National Park,<\/a> a short sail from Komodo Island and Padar, right beside the tiny sandbar of Taka Makassar. It’s a long, shallow rubble plateau where nutrient-rich currents sweep in clouds of plankton. That plankton is a dinner bell: reef mantas gather here to feed and to visit \u201ccleaning stations,\u201d where small fish pick parasites from their skin and gills.<\/p>

The result is one of the most reliable manta encounters in all of Southeast Asia. Because the mantas come to a fixed spot rather than passing through, your chances of seeing them here are exceptional \u2014 and unlike many world-class manta sites, this one is genuinely shallow enough to enjoy with just a mask and snorkel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Picture floating on a warm, sunlit surface. Below you, the seabed sits only a few metres down \u2014 and then a shadow slides into view. A reef manta, wings spanning up to five metres, banks slowly beneath you, mouth open, completely unbothered by your presence. Then another. When the current runs, the mantas ride it in an almost continuous procession over the cleaning stations, and on a good day snorkelers report losing count \u2014 ten, twenty, sometimes far more, wheeling below in slow motion.<\/p>

You don’t chase them. You don’t need to. You hang at the surface and let one of the ocean’s largest, gentlest animals glide through its own living room while you watch from above.
